Mission
|
| The Plant Exchange Office supports the National
Plant Germplasm System (NPGS)
mission to collect, document, distribute, evaluate, enhance,
and preserve the genetic diversity of economic plants important to U.S. and world
agriculture. This is accomplished through developing methods to prioritize U.S. germplasm
needs, procuring plant germplasm through international and domestic exchanges, arranging
for and participating in international and domestic plant explorations, and developing in
situ maintenance programs for crop plants and their wild relatives. In addition, the PEO
documents and assigns unique identifiers to incoming plant material and responds to
foreign requests for germplasm maintained in the U.S.
