MISSION
The Chemicals Affecting Insect Behavior Laboratory is dedicated to the discovery and development of environmentally safe chemicals to behaviorally manage insect pests and their natural enemies. The Laboratory will discover, develop and provide attractants for monitoring and suppressing existing species and intercepting invasive species at U.S. ports of entry (in support of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, the Forest Service, and State action agencies), and repellents for mosquitoes and other biting arthropods (in support of the Department of Defense). The Laboratory is devoted to conservation and augmentation of predators and parasitoids through manipulation of chemical messages they use to find each other and their prey or hosts. Our overall goal is to reduce the nation’s reliance on traditional pesticides to produce food and fiber, and to provide better personal protection against arthropod-borne diseases, thereby contributing to the well-being of all Americans. |
