State of the Art Building is Dedicated at BARC
The completion of the Plant Pathology Building at the Henry A. Wallace Beltsville Agricultural Research Center is a significant milestone in BARC's long range plans for modernizing it's facilities.
This state-of-the-art building will house the Molecular Plant Pathology Laboratory (MPPL) of the Plant Sciences Institute. Research programs in this laboratory address significant agricultural issues, with major focus on developing innovative strategies to manage and control agriculturally important plant diseases.
The disease causing agent spiroplasma, was discovered by Dr. Robert E.Davis, Research Leader of the MPPL. Spiroplasma kunkelii is a bacterium that causes the plant disease known as corn stunt or achaparramiento.
Viroids are another new life form that was discovered by a research scientist at the MPPL. The 1971 discovery of PSTVd by ARS plant pathologist Theodor O. Diener, now retired, was a major breakthrough in 20th century biological research.
